MAG AFRICAN CHAMPS TEAM TRAINING

Over the weekend 9-11 March, the Artistic squads gathered at the National Artistic Academy in Pretoria for the final preparations for the African Championships to be hosted in Tunisia in April. The Junior Training was made possible by funding from the International Federation, which was greatly appreciated. Camp directors Isle Laing and Derick Scholtz set a demanding program for the gymnasts which included routine analysis (with judges) physical testing and then a fun dismount competition amongst squad members to close the weekend off.

Pictured are our KZN Boys, Lindo Ngcongo & Siphesihle Biyase, showing off their new training gear, with Jesse Kitzen-Abelson accompanying them as coach. Keep up the hard work guys ! We are proud of you.

KZN SQUAD TRAINING

Saturday 18th February saw the first squad training for artistic boys & girls being held at the Pinetown Gymnastics Club. Over 70 gymnasts attended over the 2 sessions and it was pleasing to see that even clubs from as far as Ladysmith made the effort to give their  gymnasts an extra training opportunity and to join the coaches briefing which was held over the lunch break.

Great use was made of the academy equipment with many gymnasts benefiting from the foam safety pit and trampoline track which they would normally not have access to.

Thanks must be extended to Sherri who coordinated the activities and all the coaches who gave up their time willingly

FIG JUNIOR AGE GROUP TRAINING COURSE

This is only the 3rd time that this training course has been presented and SA was privileged to host it on behalf of the Southern African Zone with Zimbabwe , Namibia and Mozambique in attendance.
The course is designed to give developing countries information with regards to the development of junior gymnasts by giving examples of an age group completion program and a set of testing within age group bands to check progress in relation to worldwide norms.Louise Bamber and Jesse Kitzen-Abelson were the 2 KZN high performance coaches selected to attend.

KZN WAG SQUAD'S END OF YEAR CAMP

The 2011 WAG Squad Year ended with a weekend of camping at Bazley. The children did a "fitness and fun tumbling session" on the beach, some "upper body strength" in canoes on the lagoon, some trampoline work, volleyball and games in the pool.

Thanks to Julie and Corne who kept them busy and all the parents who attended with their children. Great fun was had by all, despite the inclement weather!

KZNGU HOSTS A CLINIC IN KWAXIMBA

KZN Gymnastics hosted a rural development day in KwaXimba with assistance from Dept Sport & Recreation , KZN and the eThekwini Municipality.

After a teachers & community coaches workshop on Friday 18 Nov an invitation was extended to local children to attend a morning of gymnastics, including floor work , mini trampoline , rhythmic hoop and rope skipping. Despite heavy rain 120 kids participated and were rewarded at the end of the morning with a snack pack and a skipping rope each. Included in the 10 coaches provided by the federation was Commonwealth Games medal winner Jennifer Khwela who despite undergoing recent knee surgery and intensive rehabilitation was on hand to help the young kids who may well be one of our future stars.

These activities combined with the Lotto allocation of basic equipment should see regular gymnastics sessions being presented in the future.

KZN LEVEL 1 ROUTINE WORKSHOP

KZN Aerobic Gymnastics hosted a L1 routine workshop with the Ethekwini Sports department on 9 June 2011 at the Umlazi Indoor Sports Centre.

35 People from all the local eThekwini  communities attended this workshop.

All the participants are unemployed and it is hoped that they would be able to coach the people in their local areas, and hopefully they would be able to start their own clubs and to hopefully help to give children a pastime to involve themselves in, that is positive and healthy too.
